the frank lloyd wright foundation archives (the museum of modern art | avery architectural & fine arts library, columbia university, new york) painted wood, plastic, glass beads, ink, and watercolor on paper, 28 x 62 x 44″ (71.1 x 157.5 x 111.8 cm). ‘a radical designer and intellectual, wright embraced new technologies and materials, pioneered do-it-yourself construction systems and avant-garde experimentation, and advanced original theories with regards to nature, urban planning, and social politics,’ says MoMA. in this way, the show is structured as an anthology that opens up wright’s work to debate for both experts and general audiences. MoMA has divided the exhibition into 12 sections that each investigate a key object or cluster of objects from the frank lloyd wright foundation archives. a number of pieces will be presented that have never been publicly exhibited. the display comprises nearly 400 works, including architectural drawings, models, building fragments, and furniture. on view from june 12 to october 1, 2017, ‘frank lloyd wright at 150: unpacking the archive’ seeks to critically engage the multifaceted practice of wright, who remains one of the 20th century’s most prolific and influential architects.
